Getting a trades business found on Google Maps and in ChatGPT answers
When someone in Calgary searches 'furnace repair near me' or asks an AI assistant who to call, the answer is built from what is publicly written about your business. You can't buy the top spot, but you can make sure the information about you is complete, consistent and easy to understand.
Start with your Google Business Profile
- Pick the most specific primary category (for example 'HVAC contractor', not just 'Contractor').
- List every service you actually do and every town you cover. If you work from home, set it up as a service-area business and hide the address.
- Add real photos of your work, your truck and your crew, and your hours, phone and website.
- Keep the business name exactly as it appears on your signage. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google's rules.
Make your details match everywhere
Your name, phone number and website should be the same on Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, HomeStars and local directories. Search engines and AI tools compare these sources. Mismatched phone numbers or old addresses make you look less certain.
Give each service and town its own page
A single homepage that says 'we do it all' is hard for search engines to match to a specific question. A short page for each main service, and for each town you cover, answers the exact things people search: what you do, where, and how to book.
Answer real customer questions in plain English
Write down the questions customers ask on the phone ('Do you do weekend calls?', 'How long does a tank swap take?', 'Do you service Okotoks?') and answer them on your site. AI assistants tend to pull from clear, direct answers.
Structured data (LocalBusiness and FAQ schema) labels this information so machines can read it reliably.
Make asking for reviews a habit
Recent, specific reviews help customers decide and give search engines and AI tools more to go on. Ask every happy customer, ideally with a direct link, right after the job. Never buy or fake reviews; Google removes them and can penalize the listing.
What no one can honestly promise
Nobody controls Google's rankings or what an AI assistant says. Anyone guaranteeing '#1 on Google' or 'recommended by ChatGPT' is overselling. What you can control is being complete, accurate and consistent, which is what these tools rely on.
Questions
How do AI assistants like ChatGPT decide which trades to recommend?
They draw on publicly available information such as business listings, websites, reviews and directories. Businesses with clear, consistent and detailed information are easier for them to describe and recommend. No one outside these companies controls the results.
Can I be on Google Maps without a shop address?
Yes. Set up your Google Business Profile as a service-area business, list the towns you cover, and hide your address. A PO box can't be used as the business address.
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
The profile is the most important piece, but a simple website with service and service-area pages gives Google and AI tools more detail to match you to searches, and gives customers somewhere to request a quote.
How long does it take to show up better on Google?
It varies by trade, area and competition. Fixing your profile and listings can help within weeks, but there's no guaranteed timeline.
