How Calgary trades can quote faster from the driveway
Most small trades lose quoting time in the same place: the walk-through is done, the customer wants a number, and the quote waits until tonight at the kitchen table. Here is a simple way to close that gap so the price lands while you are still in the driveway.
Why quotes stall after the site visit
The measuring and diagnosing are the easy part. The slow part is turning notes into a priced, professional document: looking up your usual prices, adding GST, making it look like a real business sent it, and then actually sending it.
When that happens at night, the customer is waiting, and they may already be talking to the next company on their list.
Build a price book once
A price book is just your standard line items with your usual price. Ten to forty items covers most small shops.
- Your common jobs: hot water tank swap, furnace service call, panel upgrade, 100 ft of eavestrough, fence panel, snow contract per visit.
- Your standard add-ons: disposal, permits, after-hours rate, materials markup.
- Write the description the way you'd explain it to a homeowner, so the quote reads clearly without a phone call.
Quote on site, from your phone
Pick items from the price book, adjust quantities, add a line for anything custom, and let the tool add GST. Speaking the job out loud and cleaning it up is often faster than typing with cold hands.
Check the total before it goes out. You stay in charge of every number.
Send a link the customer can approve
A text with a link is easier to act on than a PDF buried in email. The customer opens it on their phone, sees your logo, the line items and the total, and taps approve. No account or app on their side.
Knowing whether the link was opened tells you when a follow-up call makes sense.
Follow up once, on purpose
If a quote has been opened but not approved after a few days, one short follow-up is reasonable. Keep it friendly and specific: ask if they have questions about the scope or timing.
Questions
Do I need special software to quote from my phone?
No. You can start with a template and your phone. A quoting app makes it faster by keeping your price book, branding and GST in one place and letting customers approve from a link.
Should I give a price on site or send it later?
If the job is standard and you are confident in the scope, sending it before you leave is usually best: the customer has your number while the visit is fresh. For complex jobs, send it the same day if you can.
Does the customer need to download anything to approve a quote?
With a text-a-link quote, no. They open the link in their phone's browser and tap approve.
How should GST show on a quote in Alberta?
Show the subtotal, GST at 5% and the total, and include your GST number if you're registered. If you're unsure about your tax situation, check with your accountant.
